Getting rid of computer viruses and Trojans

The most common problem which affects the performance and security of computers is
the computer virus. They come in many guises, Trojan, back-door, spyware, malware
and adware. All are names for programs which embed themselves out of sight on your
computer and do things you probably wouldn't allow if you realised it was going on.
Our trusted anti-virus software which we rely on to protect us is our main defence
against such threats. Browsers now also have limited defences which can protect
against some known websites which try to inject such code into your system as you
surf.

How can I get rid of virus and Trojan threats?

Removing viruses and Trojans from your system is not for the impatient. The fact
that your anti-virus has allowed the malware to take a hold means that you're not
dealing with a simple threat. That is unless you've allowed your virus protection
to expire and therefore left the computer open to all attacks.

The first and simplest step to removing viruses would be to download a couple of
different virus scanners and scan the system thoroughly. Malwarebytes and Spybot
are two good free options to run alternative virus scans with. In order to make
the scans more effective, it's best to update the virus definitions and then run
the scans in 'safe mode'. A 'safe mode' prompt is initiated by restarting windows
and pressing the f8 key every second or so during the initial boot-up stage.
The virus removal can take hours to complete. Next, the anti-virus which you
usually scan with should be updated and run using safe mode. If your usual
anti-virus is suspected of being inefficient, there are a few good free options
available. Including Microsoft's own 'Security essentials' and Avira's Antivir.

Still can't remove the virus?

Some viruses are written with anti-virus programs in mind. Some will even disable
the protection on your system in order to remain un-removable. Such threats are
notoriously hard to eliminate and call for specialist tools and knowledge.
Recognising threats in logs from tools such as 'hijackthis' is the domain of the
computer geek or computer specialist. There's help to be had on many a forum from
people who have such knowledge.
